Summary

Chapter 1 begins on an early, very warm morning in July. It rained the night before, and Sofia helps her grandmother search through the vegetation to find her false teeth. Sofia asks if she can watch, but her grandmother replies that it is private. Sofia persists and her grandmother agrees. Sofia asks whether her grandmother is going to die soon.

They walk across the slippery moss on the ravine together toward the ocean. Sofia takes off her clothes and begins to swim before she gets scared and retreats. They talk about how it feels to dive before they head back to the house before Sofia’s father wakes up.
