Key

The key is a symbol of the Keeper. The Keeper makes doors and keys to enter the Starless Sea. There are many keys featured throughout the novel, which allow people to access doors into the Starless Sea, or prevent them from doing so.

Bee

The bee is a symbol of the acolyte. Acolytes lose their voices to devote themselves to the Starless Sea. The bees in the novel serve as voices for the Starless Sea’s mission, like the Kitchen.

Sword

The sword is a symbol of the guardian. Guardians are tasked to defend the Starless Sea. Allegra manipulates the goal of the guardian to prevent people from being able to enter the Starless Sea. Dorian rebels against Allegra’s beliefs to become a true guardian.
