Summary

In Chapter 1, Mabel had expected the silence in Alaska to be peaceful. She had hoped to get away from the sounds of children. She and Jack had a baby ten years before they’d come to Alaska. It was stillborn. She wished she had kissed the baby and found out if it was a girl or a boy even though it was born dead. Meanwhile in Alaska, it was November.
