Summary

After a restless night, Strike awakens Saturday morning, in Chapter 41, wishing Robin were there to bounces ideas off of. Charlotte's marriage was imminent. Strike had met Charlotte when he was 19 and she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. In addition to periods of sublime happiness and professions of undying love, he had had to put up with so much from her, so many “lies upon lies upon lies” (480). To avoid thinking about Charlotte's wedding, he takes action and drops by Kathryn's place but, as he suspected, she is not there. However, a neighbor promises to contact him when she returns. He calls Waldegrave from a pub, but nobody answers.
