Chapter 24.

The searchers agree to go out for two hours then return home. Merlyn finds Mordechai, but the man has fallen down a precipice and has severely broken his leg. He is unconscious. Merlyn struggles to find a way to rescue him and realizes that his only choice is to go down using a rope secured to his horse. As he tries to rescue the man, thunder and lightning scare his horse, and the horse runs away. Merlyn realizes he is stuck on the precipice with the leprous man without a rope. He knows he just has to make it through the night, since the others will come searching for him the next morning. When he wakes the next day, he discovers that Mordechai is dead.
