Chapter Three Summary

In Chapter Three, Rose wakes to find Elise crying over her. She sees a woman's face beyond Elise's. The woman introduces herself as Ombrine, Rose's stepmother. She tells her that Laurent is dead and that his death is Rose's fault. Ombrine explains that Laurent was on his way home for Rose's birthday but collapsed on the road when he learned of Celestine's death. Ombrine claims she nursed Laurent back to health but that he had wanted to return before he was ready. She goes on to explain that when they found Rose on the mountain, his heart failed. Meanwhile, Ombrine's daughter, Desiree comforts her. Elise challenges the woman telling her that they story she heard was that Laurent died on the road earlier in the day. Rose clings to Elise and Ombrine insists the wine be given to Rose to calm...
