Summary

As Chapter Fourteen begins, Wynn and Jack wake up, break camp, and out of habit put out the fire, even though they know the big fire is closer. There is “no sign of the man” (148) as they get themselves organized. They fish for a while, eating what they catch until they can eat no more. Jack makes a joke, and they both laugh.

Jack and Wynn then bathe quickly, finding thoughts to enjoy and to ease their fear for a moment. They prepare one of the dried meals and feed it to the woman, who manages to get together enough energy to thank them. They consider how they are going to manage the next week of travel, and then load her into the canoe to start off. Jack checks to make sure the rifle is loaded.
