Summary

As Chapter 6: “The Battle of the Pelennor Fields” begins, an enormous black beast swoops down on Theoden. The king is crushed beneath the horse. Dernhelm challenges the Black Captain, and Merry recognizes Dernhelm’s voice as Eowyn’s.

Eowyn deals a fatal wound. The Black Captain leaps down and shatters her shield, and Merry stabs him through the leg. Eowyn slashes at his face with her sword. The Black Captain is destroyed, and Eowyn collapses on top of the remains.

Theoden appoints Eomer as his heir. Eomer leads the Rohirrim in a furious attack. The men of Minas Tirith come out of the city and drive the enemy away from the gate. Theoden’s body and Eowyn are taken to the city.

The allies of Mordor reassemble as new soldiers of Sauron arrive. The men of Rohan and Gondor dwindle. A fleet of black...
