Summary

In "Pa," 10 years after Rachel's death, Astrid calls Anton to say that Manie has been bitten by a poisonous snake and is in a coma. Astrid is terrified that what happened to Manie "will happen to her too" (94). Because Anton has not spoken to Manie in almost a decade, he is reluctant to visit him. However, he also knows that "Astrid is right, it's time" (95). Many things have changed in the past years. The whole country is different. He was never punished for deserting. Conscription stopped. Black citizens are free. After hours of pacing the apartment, Anton leaves a note for the woman he is living with explaining his situation and requesting money. Anton has made many enemies this way.
