Chapter 4: The Descent of the Spirit (The Place of No Pity) Summary and Analysis

Don Juan and Carlos are at the edge of Guaymas, in northern Mexico, on their way to Nogales, Arizona. Carlos sees that there is something wrong with don Juan. He appears to be having a stroke. Carlos stops his car and drags don Juan out of the car. They walk into a restaurant don Juan knows, where people recognize him, but only as the old man he appears to be due to his ailment or apparent stroke. They eat and return to the car. As they drive, don Juan asks Carlos to take him to a store where people know him. He gave Carlos bad directions. Carlos becomes nervous and exhausted as time goes on and he cannot find the store...
