Summary

Hans says that the Pedersen boy has been gone from his home for a significant amount of time, and Mr. Pedersen would already have arrived to look for the boy. Pa waves off this concern, saying that Mr. Pedersen will arrive soon. Pa sees the bottle of whiskey and asks how they found it. Ma begins making coffee and biscuits for breakfast, ignoring Pa’s questions about who found the whiskey. Hans teases Pa and pours a drink for himself. Pa and Hans have a brief physical altercation before Pa agrees to accompany Hans to the Pedersen house. Hans, Pa, and Jorge leave together. They ride in a sleigh pulled by Pa’s horse named Simon.
