Summary

In Chapter 13, Shakespeare and Company reopened at a new location across the street from La Maison des Amis des Livres. Sylvia and Adrienne summered outside of Paris and returned to the city in September. The protagonist was glad to continue her work on Ulysses and employed Jacques Benoist-Méchin to translate the text from English to French. She also conceived a plan to illicitly place the banned book in American bookstores, with the help of Ernest Hemingway, by smuggling copies into the United States through Canada. The bookstore became busier as more Americans visited Paris, and Sylvia noticed the tourist peering about the shop in hopes of seeing a celebrated author.

James Joyce continued to write Ulysses in Chapter 14 and drew closer to completing his controversial novel. Sylvia felt overworked by his constant mood swings and unending desire to change the text...
