Love

Through the different relationships in this narrative, the author shows that there are different types of love. One type of love is that between family members. Another is that between friends which can be as strong, or stronger, than the love between family members. Yet another is what spouses feel for each other. The different types of relationships also show that being part of a family or being engaged to someone does not mean that the love associated with that type of union exists.

America’s interactions with her biological family portrays the type of love that exists amongst family members. She receives a letter from May to tell her about the birth of her niece and even though it is about the baby, she asks whether America will be there for Christmas and ends the letter with “We love you” (4).
