Summary

Chapter 37 is titled “Humph.” A group of villagers confronts the Ogress outside her home. They have anti-ogre signs. Some of them say “Humph” to express their displeasure. The Ogress says she cannot read. The villagers begin to yell at her. Someone throws a rock. Her skin is thick and she is large, but the Ogress is shocked by the cruelty. The Ogress stands in the road crying for a long time after they are gone. The crows want revenge, but the Ogress says that would be beneath them. She realizes that even small acts of kindness are important, and she sets out for the village with her loaded cart.
