Conflict

Conflict is the main theme of this book. All characters and all areas of the Confederation experience some form of conflict in the story. The biggest conflict described is between the possessed and the living, who fight over the right of dead souls to possess the bodies of the living. For the living, this is theft, torture and cruelty and cannot be tolerated. The possessed fight for their right to live again, desperate not to be forced to go back into the torment of the beyond. Neither side can compromise because there does not seem to be a middle ground. Some possessed, however, are more violent and militaristic than others. On planets such as Norfolk, the possessing souls avoid conflict by removing their new world from this universe. Others, such as Stephanie, Moyo and their friends, simply wish to be left alone.
