Simonopio

Simonopio is a main character of the novel as the self-proclaimed protector of the Morales family. He is found by Nana Reja as an infant, abandoned and braving the elements, covered in a layer of humming bees in October 1910. He has a cleft lip, which causes discord amongst those who believe his deformity is a sign of the devil’s influence. On the contrary, Simonopio is a comforting, silent presence, thoughtful of others’ needs and acting accordingly. Beatriz and Francisco adopt him as their godchild, and Nana Reja and those she trusts care for and raise him, allowing him a life of exploration and adventure with his bees. Simonopio has difficulty pronouncing words and thus chooses not to speak, communicating with his eyes and disposition.
