Chapter 1. Ten-year-old Lulu and her five year old sister, Merry, are supposed to be taking a nap but are quietly playing in their room. Their father, Joey, knocks on the front door and Lulu is first to respond because her mother, whose room is further from the front door, is also taking a nap. Lulu has been told not to allow her father into the house, but he sweet talks her into it. Lulu hides in the hallway and listens to her parents fight over money while Merry slips into the living room and then the kitchen. Their mother sends Merry into her bedroom.
