Summary

Chapter 23 is narrated by Richard Temple, the older brother of Jacob Franklin Temple. Richard loved his father, Marmaduke, but often feared that his father did not love him back. When Richard was young, he and Jacob often fought and Richard feared that his parents preferred Jacob. Marmaduke was a state senator, and Richard once accompanied him to Albany, the capital of New York. Richard was in his twenties at the time, and he was horrified when his father brought him to a brothel. Richard left the brothel immediately, but his father stayed. Richard never told anyone about that day, but he wrote it down in the form of a story. Jacob found the story and destroyed it to protect Marmaduke’s reputation. Jacob then announced his intention to write a book glorifying Marmaduke.
