San Juan Capistrano

San Juan Capistrano is the city where Graciela has grown up. She resents the California emphasis on being surrounded by perfection, evidenced by green lawns and perfectly arranged branches and roots. The city is located in Orange County with a large white, non-Hispanic population.

The hospital

The hospital is a setting of fear and disbelief that both Lock and Graciela feel as a result of their experiences with sexual assault. Graciela does not feel like she is seen and heard at the hospital, and it hurts her to know that Lock felt the same way. She feels nervous at the hospital and as if she cannot be honest with the nurses and doctors about what she knows.
