Observatory

The observatory is a symbol of illusion. Because the observatory is situated above the towns, beaches, and reefs below, it is not physically grounded in the reality of the surrounding place. Therefore, while living and working in the observatory, Basil is unable to create logical goals and ambitions for himself. He constructs and lives within this world of illusion.

Valentines

The valentines that Basil gives to Muriel symbolize hope. Though Muriel has not expressed any overt romantic interest in Basil, Basil convinces himself that she is simply waiting for him to express his love for her. His kitschy romantic gesture illustrates the nature of his hope. He longs for a relational future with Muriel, yet is unable to communicate with her in a proper matter. His love is unrequited because his hope was not grounded in reality, nor were his affections expressed appropriately.
