Athos and Raoul go to see Monsieur de Beafort, who is inventorying his belongings. He is selling as much as possible to finance the trip to Africa. He gives Raoul a commission, and sends him on ahead to recruit soldiers. Athos and Raoul leave, believing the expedition is mostly a vanity project for the duke.
