Summary

Part 2 of the novel begins with Chapter 32 and takes place twenty years prior. It is written from the perspective of Emily before she changed her name to Emma.

Emily and Jill went out to a bar in college and met a group of men, including Jeremy Rothschild. Emily went home with one of the men, his name undisclosed to the reader. Afterwards, Jill informed Emily that he was married. Emily found herself pregnant a few weeks later.

In Chapter 33, Emily told Jill that she was pregnant. She was unwilling to terminate the pregnancy, but was overwhelmed at the idea of raising a child. Jill pushed Emily to get in touch with the father, which she attempted to do through Jeremy as he was a radio presenter and easy to find. Jeremy called Emily to discuss the situation.
