Summary

Chapter 17 is titled “Heibai Wuchang.” The title is the name of the pair of gods that are now swords known as the White Impermanence and the Black Impermanence. Magnus wakes before Alec the next morning with a plan. He reassures himself he is doing the right thing. He knows he is changing and feels he has to “do something.” He takes both swords. He thinks about his early friendship with Ragnor, who taught him that warlocks face the world alone. He remembers impetuously saving a warlock named Catarina Loss from being burned at the stake.
