Summary

Chapter 30 is narrated by Caroline. In James’s hospital room, James confirmed to the police that he had taken the eucalyptus oil, Caroline had not poisoned him. After the police left, James told Caroline they were not meant to be apart. Caroline left without answering him.

Caroline went to a waiting room where she was finally able to cry. She was surprised when Gaynor squeezed her shoulder. Caroline told Gaynor the truth about James and then shared what she had found in the alley. In James’ room later, Caroline was relieved when her period started, indicating she was not pregnant. While James was asleep, she read the second article Gaynor had given her. The headline stated the apothecary believed to have killed Lord Clarence had died by jumping from a bridge.
