Summary

In Chapter 8, by September, when Chrissie and her mother were called upon to help with the delivery of Maud Cutler’s baby, Chrissie knew she was pregnant. Because Maud had gone into labor four weeks early, Chrissie’s mother told him she would need to take Maud to the hospital. She ordered Chrissie to help her gather up supplies but Chrissie stood in shock thinking of her own coming labor.

The next day, Sept. 3, the Skinner family gathered to listen to news of the war on the radio. Even though Dr. Skinner did not want him there, Billy joined the family to hear the announcement that Britain would be joining in the war against Germany.
