Sodsai Arawan/Sodsai Mudawan

Known as Sai, Sodsai Arawan is the narrator and main character of this novel. She is 12 during the early events of the story. She works in the imaginary city of An Lung where everyone is judged on the social standing of their family. Sai is from a poor area known as the Fens. A chance encounter set her up as an apprentice to the last master mapmaker clinging to the tradition ways. Sai spends a lot of her time hiding the fact that she lives in the Fens from everyone in the city, including Master Mapmaker Paiyoon. She lives with her father, a man known only as Mud, and spends all her time there hiding the fact that she has a good job.
