Summary

In Chapter 5, Grace, Viv, Weatherford, and Colin had just heard the announcement that Britain had declared war against Germany when they heard the air raid siren for the first time. They took cover in an Anderson shelter Colin had installed in the backyard. As they waited for the all-clear signal, Weatherford told them what life had been like during the Great War. Weatherford said the men, like her husband, who did not return home were the worst part of the war.

At the store, Evans surprised Grace when he gave her a list of some books they sold and how she could arrange them by topic. He indicated he had no idea where she might find the books.
