Chapter 16 Summary

Pete is giving a press conference on the circumstances surrounding Karl's death. Apparently Ronny had shot Karl in the face inside his trailer, but Karl managed to stumble outside and died inside his car. Pete takes great pleasure describing the big hole that the bullet made in Karl's face.

Bill goes back to the office and finds it empty. There are pictures left for him of the scene of the crime, but there is no sign of Ed or Sam anywhere. Bill notices a paper stuck inside Sam's typewriter, with the words "the truth is dead" typed over and over again. Bill types up the story of what happened out at the Lawton residence and sleeps in the office. He checks his messages and hears one from Sam, then he hears one from Diane saying that she wants to come see him so...
