The poem takes place over millennia, from the invention of the saxophone in the 19th century all the way to the end of the world. Primarily, however, the scenes presented take place at night. Some characters are kept awake, while others are dreaming. The town is dark, and soldiers are lying awake on bunk beds. The poem ends with an image of dawning light, signifying both the end of the night and the end of an era.
