Identity

As the teenagers in the narrative prepare to move from high school to college, they face questions regarding their respective identities. Even though the characters see each other's attributes they do not see these same qualities in themselves for the majority of the narrative. Sal's identity crises is the most obvious. Up until his first day of school in his senior year of high school, he thought that he knew who he was as an individual. In the face of change, however, he begins to question whether what he thought he knew about himself is true. He shows his doubts about his identity as Part One of the narrative begins when he wonders whether he has had the wrong idea about himself.
