Summary

In Chapter 10, Jonathan, Florence, and Lewis return to Jonathan's house and discover the clock is ticking louder than ever. Florence says the clock might come to some conclusion, even if Selenna never returns. Florence says it seems likely that Selenna is “just waiting for the proper time” (Location 1530). Florence then says that Isaac's magic seems to be completely based on logical steps, which prompts Jonathan to come up with a plan. He tells Lewis to write a spell, a series of steps, that will lead to finding the clock. Lewis is to make up the steps, and they should be as ridiculous as Lewis can make them. Lewis takes pencil and paper and goes to the study. In 15 minutes, he has the spell. Jonathan begins to read and stops several times, laughing. Florence laughs as she reads it as well.
