Summary

The next morning, the women rose earlier than they normally did. Madame Tellier's girls all helped Constance prepare for her ceremony. Madame Tellier gave directions. Then they all dressed themselves.

When the time came, everyone walked in the direction of the school. Madame Tellier and her women "proceeded majestically through the village" (21). Their appearance was impressive. Then, everyone assembled in the church. The children lined up and began singing. After the singing, the church quieted. Rosa put "her head in both hands," and was overcome by emotion (22). The ceremony reminded her of her own communion, her mother, her church, and her childhood. She "began to cry" (22). Soon the other girls began to cry as well. Even Madame Tellier "found that her eyes were wet" (22). Her sister-in-law cried, and so did everyone else in the church. People were praying through their tears.
