Summary

In “Pauly,” Pauly remembers taking the train and arriving “in the sunshine, smelling earth and pigs” (110).

In “Sally,” when university restarted, Sally forgot the troubles of the summer (111). Then one day, Francesca called to say she had found Grandy “lying on the grass in front of the old schoolhouse” with a broken hip (111).

Francesca drove Sally to the hospital. She told Sally she needed “someone to live at the high house” and she wanted it to be Sally and Grandy (113). Although resistant, Sally agreed. Their time at high house would ultimately save them.

Grandy went from the hospital to high house (114). Sally packed up the cottage.

When a boat arrived at the house one day, Sally could not understand Grandy and Francesca’s preoccupation with the coming flood. “It was only after the flood that [she] understood” (118).
