Point of View

Each of the short stories collected in The Haunting of Hajji Hotak is written from a distinct point of view. “Playing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain” is written from the main character Mirwais’s second person point of view. This vantage point enacts the ways in which Mirwais feels that his “first-person POV is rooted” in some inaccessible “space inside [his] head, behind [his] eyes” (9) “Return to Sender” is written from the third person point of view. Throughout the story, the narrator alternates between tracing Yusuf’s and Amina’s separate yet concurrent reactions to their son Ismael’s disappearance and murder. “Enough!” is written from the third person limited point of view.
