Summary

Chapter 12

A group of soldiers sit at the building site and argue. The soldiers do not want to remain in Schongau any longer. However, the devil tells them that their employer is looking for a treasure at the site. The devil suggests they look for it and keep it themselves if they find it. They are soon joined by their employer who also asks for their help in finding his treasure.

Martha Stechlin wakes in her cell and begins to think about the children, trying to figure out who might want to hurt them. As she thinks, she draws the symbol in the dirt. The Shongau driver sees this and throws stones at her, hitting her in the head with one.

Simon and Jakob Kuisl break into the Schongau cemetery in order to dig up the bodies of the first two murdered orphans...
