Ragnvald Eysteinsson

Ragnvald is the main character in the novel. He is raised as a farmer but he is descended from a king who used to rule all of Sogn. Ragnvald wants to regain this title for his family again. His stepfather Olaf has promised Ragnvald that he will inherit Ardal but secretly Olaf does not want Ragnvald to control Ardal. That leads to Ragnvald almost being killed by Solvi. The attack scars his face and Ragnvald is tossed into the ocean. There he has a vision of a golden wolf who stalks into the hall of Ran and either makes men burn up or shine brightly. Ragnvald touches the golden wolf and the touch makes him shine brightly while flames move over his arms. The vision ends and Ragnvald is rescued by a fisherman.
