Kitty Milton
Kitty Milton is a young woman of good breeding who has found the perfect mate in Ogden Milton. As the work opens, Kitty is a wealthy socialite, age thirty, living the good life in New York City with her successful husband and three children ages five, three and one. She is a woman who has been raised to hold a position in high society, and builds her life upon the rules of civility and grace, as she considers good manners "the foundation of society" (24). She saw a woman's role as that of a silent mentor, one who quietly guides her spouse and protects him from the ills of society. However, Kitty faces tragedy early on when her three-year-old son Neddy falls from an open window to his death. As her breeding dictates, Kitty remains stoic about her loss and weathers it from within. Ogden senses her sorrow...
