Summary

Leni and Matthew drift off, but he wakes her when her parents return. She dresses quickly, but her father has already found her dress on the floor. Cora and Leni notice Matthew’s boots, and Cora blocks them from Ernt’s view while Leni claims she was caught in the rain preparing a picnic for her parents. Just before Ernt checks the loft, Cora suggests they show Leni the new snow machine. The women distract Ernt while Matthew sneaks down to his boat. Ernt sees Matthew drive away, but assumes he is a tourist. Leni relaxes, but Ernt remains suspicious. When he goes to work on the wall, Cora confronts Leni for her stupidity. She forces Leni to concede that it would be selfish to see Matthew again before college.

A week later, Ernt completes the wall. A gate now spans the driveway...
