Summary

Section 11 of Chapter 2 is titled, “Friday. Midwatch: 2400 – 0400.” The watch changes again as the Viktor is cut loose from the Cadena and sinks. Krause learns that everyone who could be saved from the Viktor was saved, and is on the Cadena. He issues orders for the Cadena to resume its position in the convoy and for the Keeling to return to the front of the convoy. He also asks for, and receives, a pot of coffee.

Krause then reconsiders whether he really does need to call for help, working hard to be as objective about the situation and about his personal perspectives as possible. He “grudgingly gives [himself] a passing grade” for his actions in leading the convoy so far, and also “[acquits] himself of the other charge, that he was unwilling to break radio silence because of the possible effects on his own...
