Summary

“Fugue” opens on a married couple eating dinner. The woman suddenly feels unnerved watching her husband eat. The story then shifts to a man working in a pill factory. The man purposely switches pills around, causing customers to die. The man feels pleased. He is described as being ugly. He has developed a pattern of purposely doing jobs wrong and then quitting those jobs. Next, he acquires an office job. He dislikes his boss, who is very handsome and speaks very loudly. The ugly man goes to the boss’ house with a gun to rob him. While holding the boss at gunpoint, the ugly man takes a necklace, a mirror, and the boss’ wife. The ugly man drives away with the objects and the woman, eventually letting the woman go. The story then shifts to two roommates: Haggie and Mona. Mona...
