Summary

As Antonio de la Maza, Juan Tomas, and Salvador hide at Robert Cabral’s house, Salvador learns that his house has been stormed and his family arrested. Powerless, he decides to turn himself in, promising to name nobody except Pupo. Full of guilt for exposing his family and shooting Pedro, Salvador takes a cab to a church, but is caught by SIM men on the way.

The SIM goons take Salvador to the headquarters and strap him into a metal chair. Salvador does not know about the torture instrument, but the reader can recognize the Throne from Pupo’s chapter. Abbes and Ramfis enter, spray the room with perfume, and start torturing Salvador. Between torture sessions, Salvador finds himself in a cell with his brother Guaro, a hardened anti-Trujillista so ruined by torture he cannot communicate with Salvador.
