Jane Reyes

Jane Reyes is the 24-year-old protagonist of the novel, a single mother who is determined to provide for her daughter's future and finds herself as a surrogate. When the novel begins, Jane has just left her boyfriend Billy even though their daughter Amalia is only four-weeks-old at the time. They are both living in the dormitory in Queens with the other Filipino women, and Jane struggles to raise her daughter while sleeping in a bunk bed.
