Lwów
Lwów is the Polish city where Wojnicz is from. In contemporary global society, Lwów is now part of Ukraine. It was annexed by the Soviet Union during WWII. In the novel, Wojnicz often thinks about his life in Lwów and compares the climate, atmosphere, culture, and environment of Görbersdorf to his hometown. For example, when he first arrives in the alpine village, his mind drifts to Lwów, where "the asters and zinnias are still flowering, and no one has thought about the autumn yet" (3). In other scenes, Wojnicz thinks about Lwów when he is remembering his schooling or childhood. Scenes featuring Wojnicz's home life with Gliceria and January are often set in this location.
