Summary

In Chapter 10, “Miranda,” on his way out of Lomax’s, Ransom encountered Lomax’s sister, Miranda. Whenever he saw her, Ransom felt “a sharp sense of unease” (65, 66). Despite his attempts to leave, Miranda insisted Ransom tell her about his plans for leaving Hamilton. They spoke about water and the future. When he finally left, Ransom ran into Whitman, a one-eyed driver. Ransom asked after Catherine.

In Chapter 11, “The Lamia,” Whitman took Ransom to the zoo. Throughout the drive, Ransom studied the crumbling scenery, thinking about the past and future.

In Chapter 12, “The Drowned Aquarium,” at the zoo, Ransom studied the emptied cages and starving animals. He found Catherine feeding the lions. She was worried about keeping the animals alive. They talked about water and Lomax. Catherine still believed it might rain (75). She informed Ransom she was moving to the zoo, and would not...
