Summary
The book opens from Hannah's perspective. She is in a difficult ethics class, and she has a crush on one of her classmates, a football player named Justin. Five years prior, Hannah Wells had been raped. She has struggled with sexual and romantic intimacy ever since the rape. The students are receiving their grades for midterms. Hannah passed with an A, while most students barely got by with a C-. The Professor announces she will offer a makeup midterm.
The narrative switches to Garrett Graham's perspective. He is in the same class as Hannah and has failed their ethics midterm. This is particularly bad because Garrett is the captain of Briar University's hockey team. Failing the exam jeopardizes his GPA, meaning he might be barred from the team.
