Bruce Wayne a.k.a. The Batman

Bruce Wayne is a millionaire who, at the beginning of the story, appears to be an older gentleman, trying to enjoy retirement. However, it clear that Bruce is still a man haunted by his past. Not only that, Bruce is tormented by his inner nature, which is desperately calling out to him to take action once again as Batman. At first, his transformation occurs subconsciously as is evidenced when Alfred asks him what happened to his moustache.
