Detective Renee Ballard

Detective Renee Ballard is the main character of the novel. She is a young detective with the Los Angeles Police Department at a time when there are public protests against the police. Many of her coworkers have become apathetic to the point they do not do anything more than what is absolutely required. Ballard has a strong work ethic and takes her job seriously. She is a skilled detective and is determined to do her best. She is somewhat affected by the current climate, evident in the fact that she yells at a man who says she should be doing her job.
