Chapter 9 Summary

Master Gunnery Sergeant Jack Stecker is driving to the shooting range at Quantico. He has a vehicle available to him that is maintained by the Marines. Stecker refuses an assigned driver. He goes to the Known Distance rifle range to check the records and weapons. Satisfied, he drives back to his office. One of the people waiting to see him is McCoy.

The two men talk and McCoy, who is to report for duty the next day, says he worked with Captain Banning. Stecker has served with Banning. McCoy is trying to get his car registered on base and has been told that he cannot because he is attending the Platoon Leader's Course. Stecker makes arrangements for McCoy to leave his car in the Impound Yard.
