Summary

In "Dependency," Part One, Chapter 1, Tove marries and moves in with Viggo F. Everything in the apartment is green. Viggo F. "can't get used to suddenly sleeping with another person," so Tove stays in the living room (229). Tove begins her first novel, hiding it from Viggo F. Only happy while writing, Tove starts doubting her marriage to Viggo F. Meanwhile, she grows closer with her mother. Then she and the "Wild Wheat" artists start a club.

In Chapter 2, The Young Artists Club adds "color and substance" to Tove's life (237). Through the club, she meets Piet Hein and Nadja. Tove and Piet Hein start an affair. Nadja is his other girlfriend. Also a writer, Piet seems to understand and love Tove.
