Chapters 13 and 14, New York, Chicken Man Summary and Analysis

Ruth goes to New York after her mother finds out about her pregnancy. Ruth's mother has five sisters and a brother in New York. They all feel sorry for Ruth's mother, so they take Ruth in from time to time, but they aren't loving toward her.

Ruth stays with Aunt Mary, a fabulous dresser and meticulous person. She lives in an upscale apartment and has a live-in German maid. Aunt Mary runs a factory that makes leather trimmings for fur coats, jackets and muffs. Aunt Mary's two daughters who are about Ruth's age don't have to work in the factory; they're completely spoiled.
